"Art of Aging Expo" Features GrandDriver

CarFit®, Driving Tips and More on Wednesday, June 13

Richmond, VA June 5, 2007 – The Fredericksburg Area Senior Advisory Council announces a free event to help older residents discover the many local activities, resources and services available. The "Art of Aging: Life Begins at 50 Expo" will be held on Wednesday, June 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fredericksburg Expo and Conference Center at 2371 Carl D. Silver Parkway. More than 80 local organizations and agencies will be sharing their services and staging activities to help attendees learn more about staying independent, healthy and safe including the Virginia Department for the Aging's GrandDriver public health initiative and the Virginia GrandDriver CarFit program.

"Virginia GrandDriver CarFit is a 'drive-through' assessment where specially trained occupational therapists lead mature drivers through a 15-minute, 12-point checklist as they sit behind the wheel of their own vehicle," explains Pat Holland of the Rappahannock Area Agency on Aging and Art of Aging event coordinator. "Each driver will learn adjustments to help make their vehicle 'fit' them better and enhance their safety." In addition to CarFit, she says, the Expo will feature a Virginia GrandDriver breakout session where older drivers, and those who care for them, can learn simple techniques to stay safer longer behind the wheel of a car.

"Those interested in participating in CarFit must make an appointment, though there is no charge," Holland says. "Give us a call at 540-371-3375 to schedule a CarFit appointment."

The mission of the Fredericksburg Area Senior Advisory Council is to improve the quality of life for older persons in the Fredericksburg area by providing access to resources.
